I made a big batch of farmhouse cheddar cheese months ago. It turns out my family is not a big fan of farmhouse cheddar, we just like plain old sharp cheddar. So, I went looking for some recipes to use up the cheese and I found a recipe from Readers Digest for Cheddar Twists.
They are very simple to make and you can use just about any kind of cheese.
Mix 1 1/2 cup shredded cheese with 1 tsp. garlic powder and 1/2 tsp. black pepper. Take a defrosted puff pastry and roll it out to about 10 by 18. Then put 1/2 cup shredded cheese mixture on half of the rolled out puff pastry.
Fold the puff pastry in half and roll out to about 10 by 18 again. Repeat filling with cheese two more times. Let the pastry rest in the refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes. Then remove and cut into 1/2 inch strips.
Take the dough and twist each strip, lay on a baking sheet with parchment paper (I used my Silpat instead).
Bake in a 425 degree oven for about 10 or until golden.
My family loved these. The only problem is they are really easy to eat. I left them on the counter and we would all grab one every time we walked by.
Farmhouse Cheddar Twists
- 1 1/2 cups grated farmhouse cheddar cheese
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry
- 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
Mix cheese and seasonings in a small bowl.
Roll out puff pastry to 18 by 10-inch rectangle. Sprinkle 1/3 of cheese mixture evenly over half of pastry; fold plain half of pastry over cheese. Repeat two more times then roll out pastry again to 18 by 10-inch. Chill 30 minutes.
Preheat to 425 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Cut into 1/2-inch-wide strips. Twist each strip a few times and place on parchment paper.
Bake twists until golden brown about 10 minutes total. Let twists cool before eating.
