During the winter months my family tends to eat apples, bananas and oranges. These are fruits that are the best value during this time. I have always heard that you can store apples for up to three or four months, so with apples are on sale this week at Meijer for only $.59 a pound I decided I would try storing some of them.

I picked up about 14 pounds of apples. I bought mostly Jonathon apples because these apples store well. Thicker skinned apples keep better than thin sweet apples. One of the most important things to do when you are storing apples is to make sure that the apples don’t have bruises or cuts. If they do just set them aside to eat now.

I then wrapped all my apples in newspaper. It is very important not to use newspaper with colored ink because they contain poisonous dyes. I cut the page in half to wrap an apple. Just pull the paper up around the apple and twist it. It doesn’t need to be airtight, it just needs to stop the apples from coming in contact with each other. This way if you have a bad apple, it won’t ruin all of them.

After wrapping all of the apples I put them in a cardboard box. I tried not to stack too many of them in the box. I placed a couple pieces of extra newspaper on top of the apples and put the lid on it.

Apples do best when they are stored in cool and dark spots. I am storing them in an area of my basement that is unfinished. We don’t heat the storage area so it stays cool, however it won’t get cold enough to freeze.

I am looking forward to seeing how long my apples will last in storage. I am excited to be able to eat apples for months at a great price. Plus there are so many recipes out there to try the apples in. I hope to post a couple of updates on how the apple storage went and what I used the apples in.
