Last week during the storm I went to make some rolls. Then I remembered we were completely out of butter. With 12 inches of snow on the ground I knew I wasn’t getting to the store any time soon. Then I remembered I had some heavy whipping cream left over. In about 15 minutes I had some homemade butter.

Making homemade butter only takes heavy whipping cream and a jar. It helps if you have a couple extra hands around to help you make the butter. My arms get sore from shaking the jar, so I like to pass it around. This would be great if you have small kids to help you out.

Just pour the heavy whipping cream in the jar, screw the lid on tight and start shaking. It usually takes around 6-7 minutes before you start to notice a change. The jar will start to get a lot harder to shake. It will start to look a lot like whipped cream.

Keep shaking for a few more minutes until it is easier to shake. You will notice it turns more like a milk and you can hear the butter sloshing around in the jar as you shake it. The butter will form in a big ball and just float in the jar.

Now all that is left is to remove it from the jar. I use a spoon and place it in a bowl. You may need to drain the bowl a bit once you get all the butter out.

The jar now is just buttermilk and you can use that in cooking. I love to use buttermilk to make my copycat Cracker Barrel Biscuits.

Homemade Butter

  • 1 pint heavy whipping cream
  • 1 jar

Place cream in jar and shake for about 10 minutes. Shake until the butter has separated from the buttermilk. Remove butter from the jar and place in a bowl. You may need to drain the bowl. Butter will keep in the fridge for weeks. The buttermilk will last about 1 week.
