I love this time of year. The weather is cooling off and windows are all open. I have the smell of cooking apples throughout the house. Meijer has apples on sale for only $.59 a pound. I picked up a bunch so I could make some applesauce. My grandma use to pick up red hots after Valentine’s Day to make cinnamon apple sauce. It is such an easy recipe to make and it tastes great.
Peel and core 10 medium sized apples. You can use any kind, but I like Gala apples. I have a core and slicer that I like to use. I just press down on the apple and it cuts it into small slices.
Then I can use the knife to remove the skin from the apple. This is much easier than trying to remove all of the skin first.
Once the apples are peeled and cored you can cut them and place them in a slow cooker. Add a 1/2 cup of water and a 1/2 of brown sugar to the slow cooker. Turn the slow cooker on high and let the apples cook for 3 to 4 hours stirring every 30 minutes or so.
After 3 to 4 hours the apples will be soft enough that they can be mashed with a fork. Add 1/4 of a cup red hots and stir well. Turn the slow cooker to low and let sit for 15 minutes.
Move the applesauce from the slow cooker over to a food processor or blender. Puree the applesauce to the consistency that your family likes. We like ours very smooth.
Now you can put the applesauce in canning jars. The jars will last a few weeks in the fridge. If you aren’t going to eat them in a few weeks you can store them in the freezer. Just make sure you leave enough room for the applesauce to expand.
I love the bit of sweet and spicy that the red hots add to the applesauce. It’s perfect for these wonderful fall days. Enjoy!
