I hadn’t heard of a mung bean until a couple of months ago. I loved to put sprouts in our food, however they aren’t cheap. I starting buying them less and less. Then I read about the mung bean and how easy it is to sprout them. I ordered some from Amazon and they are so much fun to sprout! Plus I am saving money from buying the sprouts in the store.

If you have never seen a mung bean they are small and green. Before you sprout them they are hard.

I used about 1/8 of a cup mung beans to sprout. I started by washing them off in water. Then I put them in a canning jar with about 1/2 cup of water.

I let them sit on the kitchen counter for about 15 hours. Now they had almost doubled in size.

I rinsed them out once again and placed them back in the canning jar. I placed two small pieces of cheese cloth over the top of the jar and secured it with a rubber band.

After that I stored the mung beans in my pantry. They need to be washed two to three times a day to keep them damp. You can keep them anywhere that is cool and dark, but make sure it is somewhere that you will remember to wash them.

As the week went on the sprouts grew and grew.

I kept them in the pantry for 7 days. Now they were great big sprouts. They filled the whole canning jar. I washed them off and stored them in the fridge. They will last for around 5-7 in the fridge. I love these for cold ramen salad and lettuce wraps. It is a great way to get protein without eating meat. My son likes to eat them just plain out of the jar.

I am not good at all at growing things, but this was so easy. Plus my son loved to watch them grow each day. This is not only a great way to save money, but also a good project for kids. Have you ever sprouted anything?
