Years ago we were on our way home from a Christmas Eve Service when I decided I was going to make biscuits and gravy for breakfast the next morning. We didn’t have any canned biscuits so I started making biscuits from scratch at 11 o’clock at night. I wanted to make a double recipe, but by the time I went to mix in the milk I had forgotten to double it. Then when I went back to put in more I put in too much milk. By the end I had a horrible mess, I was so mad, and I didn’t have any biscuits either. Lets just say it wasn’t one of my better decisions.
Since that year I have learned to carefully plan all of our meals around Christmas. I realize that Christmas is almost 6 weeks away still, but now is a great time to start planning. If you are having guests over start to plan what you will be serving. Now is the time to try a dish out to see if you like it. Try to figure out what meals your family will need before and after Christmas too. If you need easy portable meals it is nice to have them ready, versus running through the drive thru. Planning meal ahead can help you save a lot of money.
I will be spending this week working on a cookie recipe. I always do a cookie exchange with a large group of people and I need about 8-9 dozen cookies. The last thing I want is to be making 9 dozen cookies on December 19th. So I will try out a couple recipes this week. I will freeze them, and then around Thanksgiving I will decide which ones I like best. I can then make my cookies in early December and freeze them.
The best part about menu planning now is you can come up with a shopping list and start shopping. Some things you will need to wait until closer to Christmas to buy, but so many can be bought over the next couple weeks. There are some great deals going on in the stores before Thanksgiving. Plus buying a little every week can help spread out the cost so you don’t get hit with a bunch of expenses right before Christmas. More time and more money can make Christmas less stressful. You can spend your time doing the things you want to do like spending time with your family.
